Who Doesn't Want a Opening Dance Number with Paula Abdul?

Last night was the season two premiere episode of Drop Dead Diva. The highly acclaimed show - which I am determined to make a cult classic - did not disappoint viewers last night. The episode began with main character Jane breaking into the song "Would I lie to you" by the Eurythmics. Suddenly there was Jane, Judge Paula Abdul, and the rest of the cast putting on a full scale large group choreographed number. I was also happy when I saw the two heartthrobs of the law firm wearing police uniforms - what, I have a thing for men in uniforms; they give me the vapors ;)

Here is a video of the opening number to the episode.

"Drop Dead Diva" - My New Television Inspiration

The past couple of week have been heartbreaking in terms of my nightly viewing options. Vampire Diaries and Grey's Anatomy are now over and I anxiously wait for the new season of Project Runway and True Blood to start. While on hiatus, my friend Jon recommended that I check out the newest success of the Lifetime Television Network - Drop Dead Diva.

When he first suggested it to me I thought it was going to be some sort of television adaptation of Drop Dead Gorgeous and feature Midwestern pageant queens on the circuit. So I figured during this time of television reruns I would take a chance on a brand new show. Knowing nothing about the show, I buffered the first episode, assuming that my beloved Lifetime TV would no let me down.

I am absolutely in love with this show. The basic premise of the show is that this slightly superficial model-wanna-be airhead named Deb gets into a car accident and through some mix-up in Heaven she finds herself transported into the body of Jane Bingum - a frumpy though incredibly smart lawyer. Now suddenly she is seeing life through the gaze of an overweight individual and having to navigate through the pain, trials, and tribulations that comes with a little expanded waist size.

The show, which spots a new and impressive cast of individuals - including Margaret Cho -, has already featured of number of special guests including Rosie O'Donnell, Sharon Lawrence, Kathy Najimy, Paula Abdul, Liza Minnelli, and a hilarious guest appearance by Tim Gunn. The show is whimsical and heartfelt and tackles important issues that women - and sometimes men - deal with. This can be anything from body size, sexual harassment, fatphobia, racism, divorce, and more. However, as opposed to handing us some cookie-cutter moral lesson, in the last five minutes of the show, while some dramatic elevator plays in the background (COUGH COUGH ... FULL HOUSE ... COUGH COUGH), the writers for the show try to cleverly address these issues, sometimes in a new and unexpected light. Similarly, because the main character is a lawyer, I get all the pluses of a lawyer drama wrapped in as well. Awe-inspiring closing remarks, waiting in anticipation for the verdict, the ridiculous cases, and the delicious office drama.

Most importantly, like any other show on Lifetime, this one certainly has the pick of irresistible man candy to fawn over and generally oogle. Hmmm my number 1 pick is Jackson Hurst. Our main male lead for the show, he plays Deb's ex-boyfriend and Jane's new colleague. So while Deb is stuck in the body of Jane, she has to work with her ex-boyfriend, and not tell him who she really is. There is also the guardian angel played by Ben Feldman and the arrogant hot douchebag of a boss played by Josh Stamberg.

As a lifetime fan of .... Lifetime .... I am really excited to see Lifetime stepping up as a real contender for ratings and popular series. With Strong Medicine a few years ago, and Army Wives now, Drop Dead Diva stands another landmark television show that is poignant but also a little whimsical as well. I cannot wait for the second season to start - which is this weekend by the way - so I have to get back and finish the rest of the season.
