Ricky Martin Came Out of the Closet, Fulfilling my Preteen Gay Dreams

I just received a text from one of my girls V about how Ricky Martin has just come out the closet. I immediately jumped online and verified the information through Pink is the New Blog. It seems the Latin pop star was in the process of working on his memoirs – a poignant journey that he knew would drudge up a lot of emotions and feelings that he had kept suppressed for so long. Fearful of loosing everything that he had built with his career, he kept hidden for so long.

THANK YOU LORD! I – along with a number of people – suspected and called this for the longest time and my gaydar is pretty fabulous. It might take a few months or even a few years but most if not all of my predictions come true. Although you might be thinking to yourself – really, like this was such a huge insurmountable stretch of the imagination that Ricky Martin is gay – but still, you never know and do not want to be accused of making broad-based assumptions based upon cultural stereotypes in today's politically correct world ;) Just because the man wore tight glittered pants, always had beautifully styled-quaffed hair, and has been seen on the beach in a speedo with other men in speedos in no reason to assume he is gay. Suddenly this flood of memories from middle & high school came rushing back. I had the biggest crush on him growing up – more so than my crushes on members of NSYNC. So thank god, another one for the home team! Now begins the campaign to have Ricky Martin fall madly in love with me, thus fulfilling a childhood dream. After our elaborate and fabulously gay wedding, Ricky and I could perform the tale of our love story on stages in arenas across the globe. … or something like that. The final cherry on top of this beautiful news is that he is a daddy of two ... and my how I feel about DILFs ;)

I think Ricky's coming out raises some important points. Although it is 2010, coming out still remains a struggle and an obstacle for people to work through. He hid so much of himself from people in his life because he was scared of potential consequences of coming out. In a time where representation of queer stands at its highest, there are still ramifications for coming out as queer and potential backlashes. Hopefully as more and more people – not just celebrities – decide to come out, there will be less stigmatizing and more acceptance. I hope that Ricky's coming out does not harm his well being in any way – even in 2010, it still takes a fuck ton of courage. Way to go Ricky, I hope that you write a hit pop number about this …. and bring back the tight glitter pants.
