Guerrilla Improv with the Utility Players: SUPER SMASH BROs

When I am not busy dancing and working with A'DOLLed Fantasy, I spend my time collaborating and working with a local comedy troupe in Reno called the Utility Players. Most notably I am one of the characters in their upcoming musical – IMPROV: The Musical – an Artown event set to premiere July 29th. This past week, the Utility Players have been performing guerrilla improv at various locations around town promoting upcoming shows – for a complete schedule of their Season Three check out their website HERE. The Utility Players came up with the idea of invading UNR's campus today and acting out a battle scene from the Super Smash Bros Video Game. They asked me if I would step in to play the fabulous, though terribly ineffective fighter, Princess Peach. Ian dressed as Luigi, Shane as Mario, Brandon as Link, and Joe dressed up as Kirby.

I was decked out in this elegant hot pink tight dress, a parasol in hand, and a fan as a backup weapon … I was READY! The fight unfolded and I pretty much did what I normally would have in the video game; I let the overeager masculine men pummel each other as I floated around in the background until I saw an opportunity to strike and then would whack them with my parasol and quickly retreat – I am after all first and foremost a lady. I am not quite sure how this happened but at the end of both rounds of the battle, PRINCESS PEACH stood victorious over everyone. This basically warped my reality. As an avid enthusiast of this game, I know without a shadow of a doubt , that Princess Peach never wins … ever … I think the game has rigged it so she is incapable of winning. However, there I was with broken parasol and fan in hand, watching the devastation as I was crowned the winner.

It went off amazingly. People stopped and watched us, they took fliers, and I even got a few cheers at the end of the battle. I think that guerrilla improv is a perfect creative outlet for a drag queen. The sole purpose of guerrilla improv is to go into a public space and for a brief moment in time try to attract as much attention to yourself as humanly possible. You accomplish this through over-the-top tactics, campiness, and a lot of energy … and by flailing around a lot screaming because once again … I was Princess Peach.

Video of the epic battle will be uploaded soon, I'll make sure to blog about it when it comes out. Make sure to check out the Utility Players and more instances of guerrilla improv in the future. You can check out their website here for hilarious podcasts, blogs, videos, and pictures. Until then, just remember, ALL HAIL PRINCESS PEACH!!!
