Why Does Nicolas Cage Continue to Get Cast in Films?

The thought has crossed my mind from time to time - like how Ashton Kutcher seems to continue finding himself cast in tired and overdone romantic comedies. Now Cage has had some unforgettable performances in his day; whether it was Raising Arizona, Moonstruck, Leaving Las Vegas, or Adaptation, Cage has shown his ability to act. However as of late his performances have been uninspiring. He painfully brought us such tragedies as National Treasure (1 and 2), Ghost Rider, and City of Angels. No matter if he is playing a Declaration of Independence obsessed treasure hunter or an emotionally overwhelmed angel, Cage seems to play each character with the same dull and monotonous demeanor and deliver each line as if he has cotton balls in his mouth. Like Cher, it is hard to read the emotional depth of his characters sometimes because his face seems to not move.
Adding to the list of train wrecks on Cage's career, Season of the Witch opened this
weekend to a dismal $4.5 million according to Rotten Tomatoes. The movie follows Cage as downtrodden crusader who returns home to find his homeland devastated by the Plague. A young witch is blamed for the start of the plague and Cage along with another crusader - played by Ron Perlman - are entrusted with the task of taking the witch to a remote abbey to exorcise the demon from her. The movie is receiving scathing reviews faulting poor plot lines, ridiculous CGI effects, and a dismal performance on the part of Cage. I was a little disappointed because the preview looked so promising. It doesn't take much to please me; throw in some witches, a few disillusioned crusaders and an unspeakable dark evil waiting to release its mayhem upon the world. However, I think I will wait to get this one off of Redbox.
