So last night I was reading Pink is the New Blog trying to keep up to date on all my celebrity gossip and pop culture news. There was this post about how Tim Burton is undertaking a new project of redoing Sleeping Beauty except told through the eyes of Maleficent.
How absolutely delicious!! Apparently according to the blog post, the movie would answer many of the ambiguous circumstances surrounding Maleficent. Why does she hate the three good fairies or what happened between Maleficent and Aurora's parents? I wonder if they will go in a similar direction as WICKED; a story of a witch that is a product of circumstance leaving the readers wondering if they should in fact pity the girl than hate her. Although Sleeping Beauty is not one of my favorite Disney productions, Maleficent is one of my favorite Disney villains. She was the first villain to curse in a Disney movie - hell and damn - and let's be perfectly frank here, she is a drag queen's role model: fierce, powerful, and incredibly scary.
However I do have my concerns and reservations. There have not been too many successful or amazing sequels/prequels for the Disney corporation. I cannot think of a single one. The closest one in my opinion is Cinderella III: A Twist in Time. The only reason I say this is because the sheer stupidity of the plot made it somewhat intriguing to watch. However, if Tim Burton is behind the project then I feel it will turn out to be a spectacular production.
